The futuristic nature of such a project means only the big names can focus time, resources and money on taking this up. Given that huge amounts would need to be invested into the research and development whereas the gestation period clearly is long, only the established and major auto brands can get involved in this. But some manufacturers are taking the lead in this regard and their efforts are not apparent but laudable, nevertheless.

Before the turn of this century, it was believed that self driving cars would never be a probability. Even today, when a few ambitious car manufacturer have taken the initiative to work on tomorrow’s car, there is a big question mark on just how futuristic would such vehicles be? Just what are the features that can be attributed to a self driving car is debatable. But there surely is a vision that is being shared. A car that can consistently increase its abilities to drive itself and enhance dependency for the driver is what the market can expect.

Of course, for the car to be on auto pilot, today’s crowded city streets is certainly not the right place to experiment. So, the action is shifting to the highways and the open expanse like salt deserts fields. Before that, let us look at the advanced features in the latest cars that are steps in this direction.

Cruise control is a feature that is, today, seen mostly in high end, luxury cars. In this mode, the driver can engage the vehicle to stick to a set velocity and have it continue the path. There is an upcoming enhancement that alerts the driver when the vehicle is entering congested conditions. Similarly, there are other steps like blind spot detection, surround traffic monitoring, lane departure assistance, self parking technology, besides other interesting features that are in the research and development stage. Also, there are other parts of the car that contain such intelligence. For instance, windscreen wipers that sense water and rainfall and auto activate.

While this whole chapter is in the nascent stages, self driving car technology is certain to deepen its scope and effect in the years to come.
